Peking Opera in diaspora sounds like it could be precious, but Feng sidesteps the obvious immigrant-triumph narrative by letting the troupe fracture into genuine ideological argument—the real heresy is that there's no consensus on what authenticity even means.
Feng's formal restraint—letting the theatrical codes of Peking Opera do the heavy narrative work while the three characters orbit it—locates her in a lineage of films that understand how tradition becomes a battleground when transplanted; the editing respects the form's own grammar rather than flattening it.
The decision to shoot the performers' offstage moments in stark contrast to the ornate opera sequences creates a strange intimacy that costs nothing but changes everything—suddenly we're not watching spectacle collapse under diaspora pressure, we're watching people negotiate two entirely different visual languages for living.
