A firefly saving a cuckoo clock via heartfelt sacrifice—it's the kind of earnest, morality-play setup that should feel DOA, except Trudeau commits so fully to the whimsy that it almost tricks you into believing in its own logic; almost, but not quite enough to make me care.
Trudeau's restraint in the animation—the economy of movement, the deliberate pacing—places this squarely in the tradition of mid-century NFB craft shorts, where sentiment is earned through formal precision rather than sentimentality; a small, beautifully resolved fable.
The genius move here is treating the firefly's glow not as decoration but as the mechanical solution itself—that one visual idea, the insect-as-clockwork, does the entire thematic and narrative work without explanation.
