Outer Reaches

Directed by Karl Redgen
Two astronauts searching for humanity's next home crash-land on a barren planet only to find it teeming with sentient microorganisms; when one becomes a host for the alien swarm, the surviving commander faces an impossible choice between containment and unleashing the menace on the universe.

It's a competent sci-fi horror short that does exactly what you'd expect it to do—and that's precisely the problem. The body-horror infection premise is well-executed but narratively inevitable; Redgen plays it safe when the real subversion would've been letting the microorganisms *win* philosophically, not just physically.
Redgen demonstrates formal control over the creature-design sequences and maintains tonal discipline throughout, yet the film's emotional architecture—the choice between containment and unleashing—feels underexplored; it reads more as a technically assured proof-of-concept than a considered meditation on sacrifice or consequence.
The practical prosthetics and creature work are genuinely striking on a 12-minute budget, but what lifts this above the threshold is the sound design in the infection sequence—that wet, organic layering of biological distortion transforms a body-horror moment into something genuinely unsettling without relying on screen gore.
Reviews
Short. Sweet. Sci-Fi Horror.
The visual effects of Outer Reaches are better than many current films out there.
