The scouts
Five directors on a documentary about incarcerated firefighters could've been a bureaucratic mess, but instead it's a genuinely subversive reframing of who we celebrate as heroes—and the system we forget about the moment the smoke clears.
The film positions itself deliberately within a lineage of social documentary, but what distinguishes it is the formal restraint: letting testimony and image speak without the sentimentality that typically dogs this genre.
The collaborative directorship itself becomes the film's method—five voices choosing to amplify rather than consolidate, which mirrors the very invisibility these women have fought against, and that structural choice is what makes the tenderness land.
