Planes
2015 · 4m · United Kingdom
Directed by Dominik Binegger
Genres: experimental, sci-fi
Tones: contemplative, melancholic, surreal
A sci-fi mood piece, conceived as a music video, that drifts through the experience of interstellar travel in the not-too-distant future. Sound and image build an atmosphere of solitary, low-frequency voyaging rather than a plotted narrative.
Picked by Zoe
The scouts
A music video masquerading as sci-fi—or is it the other way around?—that refuses to pick a lane and somehow nails both, which is exactly the kind of genre-straddling move that makes other people uncomfortable and makes me pay attention.
Binegger situates himself in a lineage of expanded cinema and visual music composition; the formal restraint—three minutes of drift, no plot—demonstrates a curator's understanding of how sound and negative space can replace conventional narrative machinery.
The decision to anchor the entire piece in subwoofer frequencies rather than visual spectacle is the move: everything we see becomes a secondary response to what we *feel*, and that inversion of hierarchy elevates the modest budget into something genuinely immersive.
