Time-travelers saying goodbye is exactly the kind of well-worn premise that usually puts me to sleep, and Chen doesn't seem interested in subverting it—which means either the execution is so precise it transcends the concept, or it's just competent melancholy dressed in sci-fi drag.
Chen situates this firmly in the lineage of sci-fi intimacy (Her, Arrival's quieter moments), and the formal control—how much she withholds, where the camera finds stillness—suggests a filmmaker aware of how restraint deepens elegy.
What makes this work is Chen's choice to let the world-ending happen *off-screen*; the entire emotional weight lives in the two bodies in frame, which means everything hinges on the texture of silence between them, and she's clearly trusted that gamble completely.
