It's a post-apocalyptic buddy picture wrapped in saccharine pastel animation—exactly the kind of premise that should bore me senseless, but Forsman's decision to make the robot's fear genuinely paralyzing rather than performative keeps it from collapsing into greeting-card sentimentality.
A cleanly executed entry in the tradition of eco-conscious children's animation, with considered color work and a narrative structure that doesn't condescend—though it operates squarely within established lineage rather than interrogating it.
The whale's silence is the entire film; Forsman commits fully to letting the creature remain inscrutable and wordless while Lobo's voice carries all the emotional labor, and that asymmetry is what makes the rescue feel earned rather than cute.
