RUN, LITTLE RAT!

The scouts

A rat leaving home to find himself is basically every coming-of-age script ever, just with whiskers—there's nothing here that makes me sit up and ask 'wait, what?' It's competent whimsy, which is the death of interesting cinema.

Vaknin's animation carries the formal elegance of the tradition, with a clear lineage to European art-house children's animation, though the narrative arc feels more earnest than architecturally considered.

The tonal restraint—how the film lets silence and small gestural moments carry the emotional weight rather than scoring them—is what transforms a simple premise into something that genuinely lands; it's the kind of economy that only works when every frame knows its job.
