A proof-of-concept thriller that plays it textbook straight—missing child, dark revelation, tension by the numbers—which is exactly why it doesn't land for me; the premise promises something much darker than the execution delivers.
Ruth demonstrates formal control in the Salton Sea setting and the slow-burn interview structure, situating this within a lineage of domestic noir and missing-person procedurals, though the tonal balance between contemplation and thriller mechanics feels unresolved.
The masterstroke is the mother's performance—a single glance, a microexpression shift mid-interview where Ruth holds just long enough—that transforms the entire interview from investigation into interrogation, and suddenly the proof-of-concept clicks into something genuinely unsettling.
Reviews
It's one of those 'what's really going on here' type of stories, well acted and well shot. I'd totally watch a feature-length film expanding on this.
