The scouts

A kid builds his own fort instead of joining the cool kids—yeah, we've all seen that beat before, and Cao doesn't seem particularly interested in subverting it; the whimsy is competent but it's playing it completely straight, which is fine, just not the kind of genre-resistant move that makes me sit up.

Felix

Cao's restraint in the animation—the economy of line and color—sits comfortably in a lineage of post-digital character work that knows when to hold back; there's a considered rhythm to the pacing that suggests real editorial discipline, even at two minutes.

Margot

The decision to animate the imagined secret base in a noticeably different visual language than the 'real' world—rougher, more expressive—is what sells the whole thing; that single formal choice transforms rejection into genuine world-building, and it's the kind of economy that proves you don't need budget to change how we see.
