Everyone expects a film about fathers and sons to wallow in masculine toxicity or redemption—*Seis contra seis* refuses both, which is refreshing, but the premise itself still feels like the safe version of something darker that could've been.
The film understands its place in the lineage of coming-of-age sports narratives, and the formal restraint—letting the game speak rather than the dialogue—shows a director aware of what Kore-eda or early Hirokazu Koreeda accomplished with similar material.
The decision to shoot the basketball game itself with almost documentary stillness, letting the boys' movements and hesitations carry the emotional weight rather than cutting to parental reactions, is the exact kind of compositional restraint that transforms a 15-minute short from competent to necessary.
