Genres: biography, documentary

Nía Peiró is a painter living in Castrojeriz, a small Spanish town on the Camino de Santiago. Having walked the Way herself in 2007, she settled there to welcome pilgrims and visitors from around the world; she shares the hardships she faced from a young age and how they taught her to see beauty in everything.

The scouts

A pilgrimage film about pilgrimage—the most expected subject matter dressed in the most expected form—and yet Ollitrault seems genuinely uninterested in subverting either, which is almost refreshing in its refusal to be clever.

Felix

Shoshin sits squarely in the lineage of contemplative portraiture and spiritual documentary, and the formal discipline here—the pacing, the restraint in letting Peiró's own gaze dominate—suggests a filmmaker aware of that tradition and respectful of its codes.

Margot

Two minutes shouldn't be enough time to locate someone's inner life, but Ollitrault's choice to let Peiró's painting practice carry the emotional weight rather than her narration does something most longer films can't manage.
