Shuttlecock

The scouts

Badminton as the vessel for ego-driven sports melodrama—it's so stupid it's brilliant, and Jones knows exactly how much of the joke lands on the documentary crew's deadpan complicity in Winnie's delusion. This is the kind of premise that makes you laugh at the audacity before you even hit play.

The mockumentary form here functions with real structural awareness, playing against the earnestness of both the sports-redemption arc and the observational documentary tradition—a clever inversion that situates itself squarely in the genealogy of satirical sports films.

The decision to give badminton—genuinely unglamorous, genuinely ridiculous—the full sweaty close-up treatment that usually belongs to boxing or tennis is what sells the whole thing; it's a choice that reframes a marginal sport into something darkly human.

Reviews

One of the most audacious comedies screening at this weekend's Vancouver Just For Laughs Comedy Film Festival.

Weird, stylish, and very funny.
