Josie, worn down by an unfulfilling job and the solitary weight of caring for her ailing father after her mother's death, ventures out in search of a missing ingredient for sinigang — a traditional Filipino soup said to have healing powers — and is changed by four strangers who each mirror a piece of herself.

It's a soup movie that's actually about grief, which sounds precious until you realize Rodriguez is genuinely subverting the healing-food-healing-soul trope by letting the strangers *themselves* do the actual work—the soup is almost a red herring, and that's bold.
Rodriguez positions the film within a lineage of diaspora cinema and domestic ritual-as-narrative, but what anchors it is the formal precision of four encounters that mirror and refract Josie's interior state with the exactness of a composed frame.
The genius move is trusting the soup-making sequences themselves to carry the emotional weight without score or commentary—that decision to let the mundane ritual of preparation become the film's entire emotional architecture is what makes this work on almost no budget.
