Skate Bait
2025 · 21m · Canada
Directed by David Quinn
Tones: melancholic, tender, whimsical
An aging roller skating rink is closing its doors for good when a strange visitor shows up late seeking one final skate, and the young man left behind to clean up must decide whether to grant her wish. The film lingers in the nostalgic twilight of a dying institution and the unexpected grace of a stranger's request.

The entire emotional weight of this film rests on a roller rink closing — which shouldn't work and somehow does, and that infuriates me in the best way.
David Quinn lets a closing roller rink do the elegiac heavy lifting — the stranger-visits-dying-institution form is well-worn, but the cultural specificity of the setting elevates it without exposition.
A dying roller rink as the entire emotional architecture — the setting doing exposition the script doesn't have to. That's smart short-form economy, and 21 minutes gives the elegy room without forcing it.
