Sylvia

2018 · 17m · UK

Directed by Richard Prendergast

Genres: drama, family

Tones: contemplative, melancholic, tender

A loving family sets off on what appears to be a carefree day trip — singing along to the radio, stopping for ice creams, playing I Spy — but as their journey unfolds it becomes clear that the true purpose of the outing is to say goodbye to the car the mother has named 'Sylvia,' a vessel for memories she can no longer afford to keep. Based on a true story from the American Midwest, transposed to the flat landscape of east Norfolk.

The scouts

Everyone wants to make you cry about a *person* dying—Prendergast's move is sneakier and somehow more brutal, letting the car do all the emotional heavy lifting while the family plays I Spy like nothing's happening. It's a premise that shouldn't work but does, which means it's probably genius.

Felix

A quietly masterful piece of constraint and restraint; the film's refusal to sentimentalize the loss—keeping the tone observational, the frame composed—places it in direct conversation with the best of contemporary British social realism, where economy of gesture carries the full weight.

Margot

The decision to keep the camera on the family's mundane rituals—the singing, the ice cream stops—rather than on the car itself is what breaks it open; that discipline transforms a one-note concept into something that feels like actual grief, the kind that doesn't announce itself.

Reviews

A remarkable piece with a fantastic central performance, Sylvia is a short film much like its namesake: reliable, not faultless but in pretty good condition, and able to provide you with a fantastic journey.

UK Film Review

When woven together by director Richard Prendergast they create tender fingers that gently play upon our emotions, building to a final symphony of catharsis.
