The scouts
A six-minute film about dance addiction as marital crisis should be insufferable—instead it's a gleeful genre collision that treats the absurd premise with complete theatrical conviction, which is exactly the kind of unhinged sincerity most scouts would fumble.
The film demonstrates disciplined tonal control, balancing musical and dramatic registers with the kind of structural awareness you'd find in more formally ambitious work, though it risks settling for novelty where a deeper investigation of its genre paradox might have lived.
The entire film hinges on whether the dance sequences themselves—their staging, rhythm, and relationship to the confrontation scene—actually justify the premise, and whatever choice Newhan and McDannold made there is what either elevates this or leaves it as a clever one-liner.
Reviews
Brilliant concept and stellar execution. Nominations for many things, including most technical categories, along with writing, directing and lead actor.
