Dual-role existentialism (auctioneer + undertaker) sounds like a write-it-yourself concept, but Olson resists the obvious metaphor trap — he just *watches* Dale do the work, which is somehow more unsettling than any heavy-handed symbolism could be.
A quietly masterful observational documentary that inherits the patient, formal rigor of the best cinéma vérité tradition; Olson's refusal to sentimentalize the Prairie or Dale's profession is the mark of real curatorial restraint.
The decision to hold on Dale's face during the farm sales — never cutting away, never underlining the emotion — is what transforms this from respectful portraiture into something that actually breaks you.
