The scouts
A balcony meet-cute dressed up in contemplation—this is exactly the kind of tender indie romance that makes every other scout swoon while I'm wondering where the teeth are. It's competent and melancholic, sure, but it trusts the premise to do all the work, and the premise is doing nothing.
Martin's restraint in staging this connection across empty space recalls a lineage of cinema about urban isolation and desire—there's a formal quietness here that respects both the moment and its fragility, even if the emotional register stays safely within the intimate register.
The entire film hangs on that single held look between them across the gap—Martin lets the camera stay still just long enough that you stop waiting for something to happen and realize the looking *is* the thing, and that choice transforms what could've been a greeting-card moment into something genuinely aching.
