The Fool's Mate
2022 · 11m · UK
Directed by Cian Llewellyn
Tones: darkly comic, humorous, tense
At an eccentric London pub, Fred works up the nerve to break up with his girlfriend Holly — but she thinks he's about to propose. The pub's strict house rules force them into an impromptu chess match overseen by an all-seeing waiter, and each move on the board escalates the unspoken tension between them.

The scouts
A breakup disguised as a chess match disguised as pub comedy — it's the kind of sideways narrative architecture that makes you actively resent conventional relationship films, and Llewellyn commits so hard to the constraint that it stops being gimmick and becomes genuinely unsettling.
The formal rigor of the chess-as-structure device places this squarely in the lineage of constraint-based comedies, though it risks collapsing under its own cleverness; the waiter's omniscience nods toward Pinter and stage absurdism, which elevates it beyond the rom-com formula it's technically occupying.
That waiter — the way he presides over the board without ever breaking character, turning him into this third presence that transforms every move from game mechanic into emotional proxy — that single casting/performance choice is what makes the whole apparatus sing instead of clank.
Reviews
A cute little concept executed with some genuine flair — the waiter is totally a standout.
Fun and light-hearted but keeps you engaged consistently with sharp turns in the writing, snappy editing and a score that provides rhythm to the film.
