Five prairie artists lead viewers to the southern grasslands places that move them, from ancient inspiration to present work. Landscape shapes both creativity and spirit in their words and images.

The scouts
A landscape doc that trusts its subjects to philosophize about place and creativity without irony or provocation—it's the anti-essay film, which is either radical restraint or just polite, and I genuinely can't decide which.
Parker situates this squarely in the tradition of the artist-pilgrimage film, but the formal restraint—letting the prairie and the artists' own meditations carry the weight rather than imposing narrative—feels like a considered stance on what documentary voice should be.
The decision to let five separate creative voices narrate their own relationship to the same landscape, rather than impose a single curatorial POV, is what makes this work—it's quietly democratic in a way that costs nothing and changes everything.
