A gun-as-protagonist post-apocalypse could've been clever, but Southern and Lovelace treat it like a serious object lesson—which is exactly the earnest restraint that makes it boring rather than subversive.
The restraint here is admirable: a 14-minute study in objects and consequence that recalls the formal precision of Kiarostami, even if the execution doesn't quite sustain the weight of its own metaphor.
What elevates this beyond premise is the decision to let the gun pass through scenes almost incidentally—the filmmaking choice to treat it as an unassuming prop rather than a symbolic anchor is what gives the apocalypse its actual texture and dread.
