The scouts
The Living toys with tonal whiplash—dark comedy bleeding into genuine tenderness—but it doesn't quite have the nerve to fully commit to either mode; it's a film that *wants* to provoke but keeps hedging its bets with earnestness.
Gonzalez demonstrates assured control of register and pacing, and the film's architecture—connection, disconnection, reconnection—shows formal awareness of narrative symmetry; it sits comfortably in the lineage of relationship dramas that use humor as a precision tool.
The shift in how these two characters occupy the same frame in the final beat—the camera's subtle refusal to cut away from their stillness—is the decision that transforms what could've been sentimental into something achingly real.
Reviews
It is quite an achievement, to be able to pull off topics such as these that are touted with such social responsibility and awareness with such lightheartedness. In The Living, Gonzalez doesn't reduce the subject into a laughable or forgettable topic.
