A one-minute animation about a kid and a shadow monster sounds like every other indie horror beat, but Barlow-Krelina somehow makes the confrontation feel genuinely strange—there's a refusal to resolve neatly that most filmmakers would've talked themselves out of.
The formal restraint here is impressive: a single interior, minimal character animation, and the restraint to let negative space do the psychological work—it positions itself quietly in a lineage of anxious children's cinema without ever announcing the reference.
In sixty seconds, the choice to animate the cloud as something that *moves like smoke* rather than morphing into a recognizable creature shape is what makes this work—that single material decision turns a familiar premise into something genuinely unsettling.
