The scouts
A hospital that monetizes beauty standards as a literal choose-your-own-adventure nightmare — it's the kind of premise that sounds like a PSA until you realize Shimbe is actually asking which version of yourself you'd erase, and there's no right answer. Genuinely unsettling in its refusal to resolve.
The film situates itself smartly within a lineage of body-horror and fairy tale subversion (Švankmajer's DNA is visible), and the formal choice to present beauty as binary before/after states creates a visual argument about perception that recalls early feminist experimental animation.
The decision to animate the girl's deliberation in real time — watching her gaze shift between the two faces rather than cutting away — transforms what could've been a gimmick into genuine psychological vertigo; that sustained hold is what makes the whole premise breathe.
