It's a siege thriller that does exactly what you'd expect it to do—white-cloaked villains closing in, couple trapped, tension tightens—which means it's playing the game everyone's already seen, and I'm not convinced it's saying anything the genre hasn't already beaten to death.
Bonner understands the mechanics of confined-space suspense and builds pressure methodically, but the formal choices feel in service of a fairly familiar postmodern horror template rather than interrogating it or extending the conversation.
The real lift here is in how Bonner uses the gap—the actual distance metric between hunters and hunted becomes a visual and rhythmic spine that orchestrates every cut and sound cue, turning spatial proximity into the film's formal language rather than just plot mechanics.
Reviews
It's clear what Director John Bonner is going for here, a retro 50s-style "Twilight Zone" style story where everything leads to a big twist at the end. All in all, "They're Coming Tonight" is a fun and concise short with a killer twist that is propelled by a convincing retro aesthetic and strong performances from the two leads.
