The scouts
Sex addiction road trip drama, Sundance/SXSW pedigree, 'semi-autobiographical' — this checks every prestige short box, which is exactly why it makes me suspicious. Could be raw, could be tasteful prestige.
Qin's Sundance-Sydney-SXSW circuit and the rare subject of sex addiction filtered through sisterhood place this firmly in the Charlotte Wells lineage of devastating sibling intimacy. A genuinely necessary entry.
Sundance 2024, SXSW Sydney, SFFILM, Palm Springs, HollyShorts — a 10:09 sister-road-trip about sex addiction with that festival run means Qin's semi-autobiographical specificity translated. 41.8K views and 437 likes on Vimeo backs it up.
Reviews
Samantha Ahn delivers a breathtaking performance as Charlie, nailing all the subtlety and nuances of Qin's screenplay. The editing works to immerse viewers in her desperation and frantic energy before slowing down when she is in a short-lived satisfied state of mind.
A raw, intimate film about addiction and sisterhood, following two mixed-race Asian-American women traveling across the American South.
