The scouts
A Moroccan kid on a mule dreaming of teaching—it's the kind of "wholesome coming-of-age" premise that usually makes me want to leave the room, but De Vries, Godin, and Paventi refuse to sentimentalize it, which is almost subversive enough to work.
This sits confidently in the observational documentary tradition—patient framing, natural sound design, the restraint to let landscape and daily ritual do the philosophical work that lesser films would spell out.
The choice to follow Jamal's gaze outward toward the horizon rather than inward toward conflict—to let a five-minute film breathe with genuine aspiration instead of manufactured stakes—is what makes this land as heavy as it does.
