It's a coming-of-age-closeted-boyfriend-in-the-family-home premise that's been done enough times that I'd need the film to actively resist its own DNA to stay interested—and while the tenderness is there, it doesn't quite subvert the formula hard enough to make me sit up.
Lìonadh locates this film in the lineage of kitchen-sink drama and queer British cinema with real formal precision; the restraint of the mise-en-scène and the editing's refusal to overplay the emotional stakes shows a director conversant with the tradition.
The film's real engine is the sound design—the way ambient domestic noise (kettle, footsteps, breath) becomes a pressure cooker of exposure—and that singular choice to make invisibility audible rather than just visual is what transforms a familiar scenario into something tactile and lived-in.
Reviews
Too Rough is filled with a remarkable sincerity, an intense sadness, a powerful atmosphere and a touching relationship. Sean Lìonadh's direction beautifully embraces the heavy task at hand of bringing this powerhouse of emotion to life and creates a memorable, harsh but tender experience.
