The howl of a predator interrupts an ancient ceremony.

It's structurally competent but doesn't quite break the mold—the predator-interrupts-ritual setup is familiar enough that even the mythic framing can't quite shake the sense we've seen this bargain before.
Cannon commits fully to the ceremonial register, letting the formal patience of the ritual itself become the film's architecture; the eruption of the howl reads as a genuinely considered violation of that formal space, which is where the horror lives.
The sound design choice—that specific moment the howl breaks through the ceremony's acoustic world—is what transforms this from folklore exercise into genuine dread; it's the one decision that makes the budget disappear.
