On paper this is Hallmark-adjacent sentiment—sick uncle, magical visitor, redemption arc—but I'm genuinely curious what formal choice Samuelson made to keep it from collapsing into schmaltz; if there's a gamble here, I haven't seen it yet.
A tender animation that understands the grammar of loss and domestic space; the restraint in not overselling the emotional beats, and the way the ward itself becomes a character through design, places this in a lineage of animation that trusts its audience's intelligence.
The decision to animate the hospital as something that *replaces* rather than surrounds Uncle Bob—a formal shift in how the world contracts around illness—is what transforms what could be saccharine into something genuinely unsettling and human.
