Vengeance is exactly what it says on the tin—a straightforward sci-fi action beat with zero appetite for subversion or formal risk. It's competent genre work that knows its lane and stays in it, which is precisely why it lands nowhere near my shelf.
A tautly constructed thriller that understands the grammar of action cinema and alien-invasion dread, though it operates within well-established conventions rather than interrogating them; the editing keeps pace without flourish.
Seven minutes of Marine-versus-alien combat lives or dies on a single performance choice or sound design decision that makes the stakes feel lived-in rather than theoretical—that's the hinge this film needed to find, and I'm curious whether Fitzpatrick locates it.
