Home alone, a little flame takes it upon himself to bring trick-or-treaters some Halloween spirit.

The scouts
A sentient flame greeting trick-or-treaters is genuinely weird premise-wise, but the execution plays it so safe and sentimental that it forgets to actually interrogate the *wrongness* of a fire entity interacting with children—it's got the skeleton of something subversive and chickens out.
Balashov and Butler land the tender-whimsy tone with formal precision, and the animation's restraint—knowing when not to anthropomorphize—situates this nicely in the lineage of handmade character animation that privileges mood over spectacle.
The decision to keep the flame's face deliberately ambiguous—readable as both mischievous and melancholic depending on the light—is what makes the whole thing work; that one formal choice transforms a one-minute premise into something that actually *means* something about loneliness and connection.
