Water Tower Symphony plays it too straight as visual poetry—earnest landscape meditation when it could've been something weirder, more dangerous. I respect the surrealism pretense, but the film genuinely believes in its own reverence, and that's where it loses me.
Johansson situates this squarely in the essay-film tradition of Koyaanisqatsi and Marker's work, but with a specifically Nordic restraint; the formal choice to treat disappearing infrastructure as a requiem for collective memory feels both formally rigorous and genuinely moving, a meditation on place that earns its melancholy.
The singular move here is the sound design—treating the water towers themselves as instruments that compose the landscape rather than merely inhabit it, which pivots the entire piece from nostalgia into something architecturally alive and spare.
Reviews
These slowly disappearing surreal buildings deserve to be depicted through art: they deserve a visual symphony of their own.
