WITHIN, WITHOUT
2018 · 6m · Denmark
Directed by Patrycja Cmak
Genres: action, drama, fantasy
Tones: contemplative, melancholic, mythic
In a barren, cold world, a lone knight travels toward a golden city, the sole beacon of hope. Blocked by an infallible monster, the knight must fight through — but can they defeat the monster from within the heavy armour without facing the memories that haunt them?

It's got the bones of mythic fantasy but plays it painfully straight—the internal-monster-is-the-real-enemy metaphor lands with all the subtlety of a anvil, and there's nothing here subversive enough to make me care about yet another armored person discovering their trauma.
Cmak understands the grammar of medieval quest cinema deeply enough to dismantle it from within; the formal restraint—how the edit refuses catharsis, how the golden city stays perpetually distant—positions this in conversation with Bresson and Pasolini rather than tentpole fantasy.
The decision to keep the camera locked in claustrophobic proximity to the armor itself, making the suit feel like both cocoon and prison, is the choice that makes this work—it transforms a familiar conceit into something visceral and genuinely unsettling on what must have been a minimal budget.
