The scouts
Everyone expects the inspiring disability narrative, and Salazar just... lets the pinball speak instead of the inspiration machinery—which is somehow more radical than any formal experiment could be.
A disciplined observational documentary that resists sentimentality through formal restraint; the film trusts the spatial grammar of the arcade and the precision of competitive play to carry its emotional weight.
The sound design choice of letting the machine's mechanical language dominate over score or voiceover becomes the film's entire thesis—it's where the subject's autonomy actually lives.
Reviews
Wizard Mode follows champion pinballer, Robert Gagno, as he battles the international competitive pinball world and the day-to-day challenges of living with autism. There is so much in this little portrait, I love it.
