A financier-turned-fly-fishing-convert in Bhutan sounds like the most boring premise imaginable—which is exactly why I'm impressed it somehow works; the film refuses the expected spiritual awakening arc and instead lets the obsession eat the man whole, which is genuinely perverse.
Knight and Rummel situate themselves squarely in the tradition of the contemplative sports documentary—think Riding Giants or The Giver—but their restraint in the editing and their commitment to Bhutan's mythic geography as co-protagonist elevates this into something formally considered and genuinely moving.
The decision to treat fly-casting itself as a rhythmic, almost meditative language rather than just action footage transforms what could've been a travel doc into something where every loop of line becomes a kind of visual argument about obsession and control.
