You're Now Beyond Hope, Arizona
2022 · 21m · USA
Directed by Nick Dugan
Tones: contemplative, melancholic
An alcoholic drifter named Hank arrives in a desolate Arizona desert town to collect a debt for a loan shark, only to discover his assigned target is Lucy — the AA sponsor who had been trying to help him get sober. The film repurposes a crime thriller setup as a meditation on radical forgiveness, personal accountability, and the capacity for change.

The scouts
Drunk loan-shark collector finds his target is his AA sponsor — neo-western pivot to forgiveness with an actual critique of the 12-step powerlessness doctrine. That last part is what saves it from being Sundance-issue.
Dugan uses hit-man genre mechanics to arrive at forgiveness rather than violence, embedding a critique of 12-step powerlessness inside a neo-western — the genre-as-trojan-horse register of David Lowery. Measured ambition.
Repurposing crime-thriller mechanics for emotional rather than violent catharsis while embedding a philosophical critique of 12-step doctrine — that's a sophisticated genre-vs-theme inversion at 21 minutes. Multiple Best Narrative Short wins back the craft.
Reviews
Whereas films of this genre over-index on trying to be macho and cool, Dugan's short is shockingly — achingly even — sincere. A film about pain and grief, addiction and self-loathing, it is a big-hearted attempt at reconciling these sort of human themes into what is, ostensibly, a crime thriller.
Those seeking a gritty, gut-wrenching crime story without too much in-your-face violence should be directed toward You're Now Beyond Hope, Arizona. Highly Recommended.
